'I Got Rhythm', 'Summertime' and 'It Ain't Necessarily So' are the 3 Gershwin tunes which the renowned performer, teacher and composer Paul Harvey took as the themes for his studies.

Paul Harvey was born in Sheffield in 1935, studied at the Royal College of Music, London and has been a member of the Band of the Irish Guards, the Scottish National Orchestra and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
For most of his career he has been a freelance player in London, working mainly with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic, doing film and recording sessions and many West End Musicals. He was also leader of the London Saxophone Quartet and Professor of Clarinet and saxophone at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall.
Paul Harvey is a prolific composer for both clarinet and saxophone. His "Three Etudes on Themes of Gershwin" originate from a commission by Anton Weinberg for an encore piece for a recital at the Wigmore Hall in 1975, based on 'It Ain't Necessarily So'. The publishers Chappell & Co. then commissioned two more pieces to make up a suite. 'I Got Rhythm' is followed by 'Summertime (By Twickenham Ferry)' which gets its subtitle from the dedicatee's stay in Twickenham one summer and the photographs he took of the Thames, which he later projected on to a screen during his recitals. This edition includes an alternative ending for 'Summertime' which uses multiphonics and is explained by the composer in the introduction.
