Return of the Fallen was written on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of 'Royal Fanfare Leopold and Albertiesten' from Kieldrecht (B). This band was founded after World War I as an association of veterans. The work tells the story of our veterans. It starts with a reference to the finale of Bruckner's 8th (apocalyptic) symphony. This is followed by a heroic theme that recurs several times. In the solo passages in the middle part, a look is taken at the infirmary, how bad they are and how quickly they are fixed up again to go back to the front. The nostalgia for home is also expressed here. After repeating the first Bruckner theme an aerial photo shows all the destruction and damage after which the war ends abruptly, unsolved, waiting for a sequel...
