Franz Wilhelm Ferling: 48 études - Opus 31 - Volume 1
Studies - Saxophone
Cotage: GB9595

Arranger:Gaetano Di Bacco

Every saxophone player is well aware of the educational importance of Franz Wilhelm Ferlings 48 Etudes. Composedfor oboe in 1831, they have become a staple in saxophone studies worldwide. In 1942, Marcel Mule adapted the Etudes for saxophone and turned them into a pedalogical must.
With my students at the Conservatory, my approach has always been technical as well as musical. Thus arose the needfor a piano accompaniment that would highlight the harmonic structure and musical form of the pieces but also makethem suitable for the concert stage. I have tried to espouse the bel canto spirit of composers such as Bellini, Donizettiand Rossini. The absence of tempo markings is purely intentional: it is hoped the character of the piano part will help determine the right tempo for each etude.
I am incredibly grateful to Claude Delangle (to whom this edition is dedicated) for having encouraged me to complete this exciting but exhausting work.
Here, I cannot help thinking about Charles Gounod who, 135 years ago, composed his beautiful Ave Maria on Johann Sebastian Bachs First Prelude from the Well-Tempered Keyboard (Vol. I) In our present case, a German composer wrote 48 melodies; 180 years later, an Italian musician adds a piano accompaniment, and his work is published in France: this German-Italian-French collaboration is a truly European effort!
